11. FDM vs. Resin Printing: What's the Difference?
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) uses solid plastic filament that’s heated and melted before being deposited layer by layer on a print bed. It’s commonly used with PLA filament, which is relatively easy to handle and safe for most users. FDM printers are known for producing durable and larger prints, making them great for bigger models or prototypes.
On the other hand, Resin printing (SLA – Stereolithography) uses liquid resin that’s cured with UV light, layer by layer. Resin printing creates higher-quality, highly detailed prints with smooth surfaces, perfect for miniatures and intricate designs. However, the process is a bit messier. It requires chemicals for cleaning, additional curing devices, and handling with care (gloves and a mask are recommended to avoid exposure to fumes and chemicals).
TL;DR: Resin printing gives you superior detail and quality but is more complex and requires extra care. FDM is simpler, produces stronger prints, and works well for larger models.
